RCP CT and ACT national conference 2026
We look forward to welcoming college tutors (CTs) and associate college tutors (ACTs) to the in-person RCP CT and ACT national conference taking place on Friday 13 November 2026.
The day will include workshops, lectures and networking. This event provides 5 CPD credits and remains free to CTs and ACTs. The programme is available to download below. We hope to see lots of you there
Registration will be open from 8.45am and the day will begin with regional networking. All refreshments and lunch are provided*.
The programme will run between 9.45am - 5pm.

What are the top practical tips to make the experience of improvement better for resident doctors when they land in your department? We will explore what the role of consultants, clinical and educational supervisors to prepare resident doctors for improvement, focus on audit and improvement, are they the same or dancing partners? Discuss developing multi-disciplinary communities of practice for improvement and what coaching support could like look like in reality. Importantly, how we could best align improvement activity to the needs of the department and organisation priorities.

This is a focused interview skills session designed specifically for doctors. Learn how to deliver confident, structured answers, handle challenging clinical and ethical questions, and stand out in competitive specialty interviews. Should you be willing to put yourself out there, we can give you personalised feedback, to allow you to gain the skills confidence to perform at your best on interview day.

You have a service that needs to change — this workshop gives you the tools to make the case. Through the five case model, real examples, and practical frameworks, you'll learn how to build a business case that decision-makers can actually approve. We'll cover how to frame a compelling case for change using national benchmarking and clinical evidence, structure a credible options appraisal and demand model, construct your financial argument, and navigate the process — including when to submit, who to engage, and how to make finance your ally. You'll leave with a clear structure, practical tips, and the confidence to go back to your organisation and get started.

Have you ever observed a valued colleague being overlooked or dismissed in a meeting? Have you ever witnessed unfair bias and felt unable to challenge it? If so, this workshop is for you! In this session we will consider what it means to be an upstander in the workplace, identify how you can recognise unconscious bias, sensitively approach difficult conversations and learn how you can contribute to creating an environment of advocacy.
By the end of this session learners will be able to:
• understand what it means to be an upstander
• appreciate how unconscious bias shows up in the workplace
• know how to contribute to an environment for advocacy
• sensitively approach difficult conversations.

Facilitator: Professor Kerry Calvo
This interactive workshop invites participants to design, deliver, and improve clinical teaching more intentionally and effectively. Using the principles of Constructive Alignment, participants will explore how to design clear learning outcomes and align them with appropriate teaching activities and assessment. Drawing on Universal Design for Learning (UDL), the session will focus on delivering learning in ways that are inclusive, flexible, and responsive to learner diversity. Through guided activities and discussion, participants will apply these principles to their own teaching contexts and consider practical strategies for evaluating and improving teaching, to support effective learning in clinical settings.

Professor Phil Bright FRCP
Professor Phil Bright is Associate Medical Director for Workforce at the Federation of Physician Colleges and head of school for medicine in NHS England, where he leads postgraduate medical education and training. He also chairs the national heads of school of medicine. He has extensive experience in clinical leadership, workforce development, educational governance, and the delivery of high-quality, learner-centred training pathways. His work focuses on supporting doctors in training and strengthening collaborative education across trusts and academic partners. Philip led the development of the advanced general internal medicine (GIM) programme and is now leading work on the standalone GIM training pathway, aligning training with evolving service delivery needs. His broader interests include the safe integration of artificial intelligence into medical education and training.
Dr Aklak Choudhury FRCP
Dr Aklak Choudhury is the clinical director for Improvement at Royal College of Physicians, and supports the RCP led National Audits NRAP and FFFAP, the Chief Registrar programme and supports improvement development for the college. He has held roles as associate editor for BMJ Open Quality and as a QSIR Associate. He is medical director for quality improvement, research and innovation at University Hospitals Derby and Burton Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and a respiratory physician. He is passionate about developing an open learning culture and leads on quality improvement capability. He is the senior editor for the trust quality and safety learning platform (QSL) and is trust lead for clinical audit and outcomes. Through his MSc in medical education, he has facilitated many national face to face and online improvement workshops and coached doctors through improvement programmes. He is the co-founder of QIPstart, an educational platform to learn QI.
Dr Ak Maheswaran
Dr Ak Maheswaran is a consultant anaesthetist and head of service for theatres at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. He is also clinical lead for One NHS Finance, where he works to bridge the gap between frontline clinical practice and the financial decisions that shape it. He delivers NHS finance education nationally, with a focus on demystifying business cases, procurement, and organisational decision-making for clinical audiences. He holds an executive MBA and a Master's in medical law and ethics, bringing a rare combination of clinical, financial, and legal perspective to everything he teaches.He is interested in everything, commits to too much, and coaches junior football in whatever time remains.
Dr Stephen Joseph
Stephen is a respiratory and internal medicine registrar working in Northeast London. He holds a Master's in clinical education from King's College London, where his dissertation research examined how doctors make sense of unprofessional behaviour in clinical practice — work that formed the basis of his Turner-Warwick lecture for the Royal College of Physicians. He co-chairs the RCP's Resident Doctor Committee and has a particular interest in professional culture, the training environment, and how medical education can better reflect the complexity of real clinical work.
Professor Jo Szram FRCP
Dr Shruthi Konda FRCP
Dr Konda is a consultant respiratory physician at Royal Brompton Hospital, one of the UK’s leading centres for respiratory medicine. A graduate of Imperial College London, she trained in London in respiratory and general internal medicine and was appointed consultant in 2017. Her specialist expertise includes sleep disorders, respiratory failure, and complex lung disease. Alongside her clinical practice, Dr Konda is a respected medical educator and leader. She established a respiratory high dependency unit prior to the pandemic and is an MRCP PACES examiner for the Royal College of Physicians. As the RCP Linacre Fellow, she supports physician training nationally across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. She was an educational lead for the British Sleep Society and regularly chairs and speaks at national and international conferences, representing sleep education at a European level.
Rachael Daw
Rachael Daw trained as a physiotherapist at the University of Liverpool and worked for the NHS for nearly 20 years, eventually specialising in care and surveillance for upper limb arthroplasty. Rachael completed a Masters degree in Advanced Practice in Healthcare in 2016 and went on to be a lecturer in Advanced Clinical Practice at the University of Liverpool, before joining the RCP in 2022 where she is now a Senior Educationalist. Rachael is a trained workplace coach and also maintains keen interests in physiotherapy, rehabilitation and exercise medicine, alongside her current role in medical and multi-disciplinary education
Professor Kerry Calvo
Dr Kerry Calvo has a clinical background as a GP and has worked in medical education for over 20 years across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate contexts. She has held educational roles in multiple medical schools, supporting the development of clinicians in teaching and educational leadership roles. Kerry currently co leads a Master’s programme in education for health professionals, where she works with healthcare professionals from diverse disciplines and settings. Her educational interests centre on course and curriculum design, with a particular focus on inclusive and accessible approaches to learning. This interest underpins her ongoing doctoral research, which factors supporting effective learning for diverse learners in health professions education.
